Ladakh is a high altitude desert-steppe. Historically, local communities in Ladakh lived self-sustained lives by husbanding local natural resources. However, in the last few decades improved connectivity and modernisation have transformed Ladakh into a market-based consumerist society, which has been boosted by the boom in the tourism sector since 2010. The lack of checks and balances has resulted in over-exploitation of natural resources, increase in lifestyle diseases, environmental degradation and social fragmentation.
There is an urgent need to rethink development in mountain regions such as Ladakh. Sustainable development is context-specific. This requires dialogues between different stakeholders, harnessing of diverse expertise, critical evaluation of various practices, support for innovations, and adoption of relevant technologies.
